Open Question: Cost of a road trip around the United States of America?

Myself and 3 mates want to get out of England next summer and spend 3 months in America. We want to have the best road trip ever starting from New York and going too San Francisco and back, an east to west coast and back. From NY too CA we plan to go across the northern states and on our way back to NY go along the southern states. We want to rent a car and estimate the journey to be about 8000 miles / 12875 km long. I would like to know an estimate on prices for fuel and renting a car for 90 days. Also any estimates for food and accommodation. Basically how much will it cost for a road trip lasting 90 days with 4 people cost. Any feedback / answers would be much appreciated. If anyone has any sites that they think we should check out it would it would also be appreciated.
